The root cause of the modern sexlessness and singleness is capitalism

It is becoming globally recognized today that sexlessness, singleness, and declining birth rates are common problems in developed countries. However, despite the seriousness of these issues, research on them is surprisingly scarce. Japan was the first country in the world to see these problems surface in the late 1990s, but without any serious efforts, the birth rate continues to decline. If the current pace of decline continues, the birth rate in Japan will drop to zero in 18 years (birth rate data can be found here) . Elon Musk has expressed concern about this several times, predicting that "Japan will disappear." A birth rate of zero is a critical situation that threatens the very survival of a nation. However, In Japan, there is no sign of seriousness in addressing this problem. Not only are there no serious efforts being made, but there are no researchers, and naturally, no one is calling for an end to the crisis. This suggests that the mind control imposed on modern people is far too deep. Modern people view sex as such a taboo that they cannot even seriously research it.

To illustrate the lack of researchers studying the issues of sexlessness and singleness, let's first explain how Westerners first became aware of these problems. Initially, Westerners perceived Japan's sexlessness as a unique issue specific to Japan. Westerners had a stereotype of Japanese people as perverted otaku, and they linked their sexlessness to the Japanese people's perverted tendencies. This is from a 2013 BBC interview, and the title reflects the Westerner's stance.

Meanwhile, an article published in the British newspaper The Guardian in 2013 sparked controversy.

This article, which attempted to dismiss the issue as "Japanese people are perverts" as had been the case up until then, sparked a debate with some people saying "That's right" and others saying "No, that's not true."

”it’s a strange thing that can only happen in Japan."

The Isla Vista shooting that occurred the following year in 2014 was what finally settled this debate. Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old California man of half white and half Asian descent, blamed society for the fact that women had ignored him and planned revenge. He wrote a lengthy manifesto and video confession before randomly killing six people and then committing suicide.

This incident sent shock waves through Americans, who had laughed off the issue of sexless and singleness as a problem limited to Japan. It not only brought the existence of incels to the nation's attention, but also led to Americans realizing that the incel problem is not just someone else's problem, but a problem facing Americans themselves. Kate Julian, a senior editor at The Atlantic magazine, became interested in the issue and began her own investigation, publishing the results in an article. The article was picked up by major media outlets, and helped establish the term "sex recession." In this lengthy 39-page article, the author introduces each of the causes of sexlessness he heard during his research.

”Over the course of many conversations with sex researchers,
psychologists, economists, sociologists, therapists, sex educators, and
young adults, I heard many other theories about what I have come to think
of as the sex recession. I was told it might be a consequence of the hookup
culture, of crushing economic pressures, of surging anxiety rates, of
psychological frailty, of widespread antidepressant use, of streaming
television, of environmental estrogens leaked by plastics, of dropping
testosterone levels, of digital porn, of the vibrator’s golden age, of dating
apps, of option paralysis, of helicopter parents, of careerism, of
smartphones, of the news cycle, of information overload generally, of
sleep deprivation, of obesity. Name a modern blight, and someone,
somewhere, is ready to blame it for messing with the modern libido.”

Also in 2018, there were some movements in Japan to address the problem. However, Japan's approach to problem-solving was not about investigating the cause, but rather a capitalist one. For women suffering from sexless life, a new type of sex service for women emerged. While there had been some sexual services for women before such as male escorts, the services provided by male escorts were merely dates, and sexual satisfaction was not guaranteed. However, the newly emerged sex service for women positioned the sexual satisfaction of women as the central service. Since sexual satisfaction is provided, the men called "therapists" had to undergo thorough training in bed techniques before starting work. This pre-training is the crucial difference from the previous male escorts. The sex service for women became a hidden hit in the business world of Japan, and the founder who made a fortune in a short period of time was arrested in 2024 for tax evasion of 300 million yen(2 million USD).

So, that's a rough overview of the sexlessness and singleness problems in Japan and the United States. Looking at this trend, you can imagine that there is not only no movement to solve the critical situation of the birth rate dropping to zero in 18 years, but there is virtually no research on the subject. We often hear the opinion that internet pornography is the cause, and it is true that its impact is serious. According to a government survey, half of Japanese men in their 20s learned about sex from adult videos and have come to believe that the false sex in porn is real sex. Many young women complain that "sex is just painful." Also, many wives suffering from sexless marriages complain that "my husband is addicted to pornography and won't even touch me." This internet pornography problem is extremely serious and needs to be solved, but it is not the root cause of the sexlessness problem. Pornography is a substitute for real sex, and because real sex has become so difficult, everyone has turned to it. And because it is so easy to access, the substitute has somehow become the goal itself. It's doubtful that banning pornography would lead young people to start having real sex, and in fact, I think it's difficult to even ban it at this point.

A bigger cause than internet pornography is feminism. The reason Japan became sexless ahead of the rest of the world is because of feminism, but this fact is not recognized at all globally. After World War II, General MacArthur, who occupied Japan, demanded five reforms from the Japanese Prime Minister, and one of them was feminism. This was of great significance to MacArthur because, for America, the occupation of Japan was a "project to civilize and democratize racially inferior others," and in that context, the liberation of women was highly demonstrative.

Seen by the occupation authorities as victims for centuries of “Oriental male chauvinism,” Japanese women embodied feudal tradition, backwardness, and lack of civilization. As helpless women of color, they became ideal candidates for American salvation and emancipation.

However, the fundamental ways of thinking differ between the West and the East, and it is doubtful whether Japanese women were truly oppressed. Rather, women in the Edo period viewed Western women as the oppressed ones. This discussion is lengthy, so I will address it again on another page, but in short, under MacArthur's occupation, feminism in Japan became excessive, men lost the motivation to pursue women, and Japan became one of the first countries in the world to experience a sexless society.

So, what is the root cause of the sexlessness and singleness? The reason Christ was great is because he affirmed love and rejected money. Extending this idea of Christ, I believe that love and money are a trade-off. A trade-off is a relationship where gaining something means losing something else, and in this case, it means "if you pursue money, you give up love, and if you pursue love, you give up money." Marx said the following in Capital:

"Capital divides and controls workers by pitting them against each other as competitors."

Capitalism is a harsh world where people dominate, submit, compete, and clash with one another. And this harsh world was once a male-only world. There was a clear division of roles: men earned money in the harsh outside world, and women showered children with love at home. However, with the advent of feminism, women entered capitalism. This may have increased money throughout society, but there was no one left to provide love at home. Love was lost from the home, and many children began to suffer from anxiety and self-denial caused by a lack of affection. Men and women were no longer beings who helped each other, but rather were competing and clashing as equal workers. I believe this is the root cause of the problems of sexless marriages and unmarried people.
